When will the 12 million eastern German victims of ethnic cleansing and the survivors of the two million who were murdered or died in the process, the six hundred thousand victims of Allied terror bombings, the millions of Germans who died of starvation under Allied blockage and de-industrialization and Eisenhower’s withholding of food to them, be given proper memoralization? Far from the “definitive refutation” of revisionism that was hoped for. In How Could This Happen, historian Dan McMillan attempts a comprehensive explanation of the Holocaust by answering them: by showing where Hitler’s ideas came from and why they enjoyed support among much of Germany’s educated elite; how World War I produced a generation of men so hardened to human suffering that they would gladly kill millions in the service of these ideas; why a man like Hitler could come to power in Germany, but would have had no chance in other Western democracies like France or the United States; how Hitler, once in power, could become so admired by his countrymen that many of them would do whatever he commanded; what psychological mechanisms allowed men who were not Nazis to murder defenseless civilians; and other factors which let tens of millions of Germans who knew about the murders react with cold indifference.

I recently read similar comments of dislike of Roma from an Italian on Desicritics.org, a sister site to this one. The question what makes us human, and who counts as human is therefore important. But if any publication is capable of such courage, it should be the Journal for Historical Review! Remembering the Holocaust is an important act in itself, and honouring its victims, both Jews and gentiles, particularly those with no family left to remember them, is a further reason why the work of the British Holocaust Commission will be so important.

It is the largest and most exhaustive historical society of its kind in the region. These were my conclusions of what happened. It has been widely discussed the commercialization of the Holocaust promoted by Hollywood and I believe that a special section for the American movies would help us to comprehend better the differences between Hollywood and European film industry.

They’re just the same as you and I.” I stared for a while. By 1776, a viable African-American culture had emerged out of slavery, fashioned and shaped by the slaves themselves partly out of the African past but mainly in response to slavery as an institution. It was a very good day to be a white American. Zygmunt Bauman has persuasively argued concerning the Nazi Genocide that it is precisely this fact -- that most of the perpetrators of these crimes against humanity would be considered "normal" and would have passed tests administered to our own police officers -- that poses the real challenge to our advanced form of society and the scientific disciplines which attempt to understand it. [2] And Christopher Browning's work on Police Battalion 101 has shown that approximately 85% of the "ordinary" men assigned to carry out these grisly crimes were fully prepared to do so. [3] To make Göth into a monster, to place him so far off the spectrum of humanity is once again to displace the horror of the crime, to relegate it to the abnormal and the pathological, to ban it to an arena outside of humanity so that we do not have to confront Nazism as "the banality of evil."
